Icy domain of frigid splendour, the land of anomalies and paradoxes!

Mt. Phonyin Razi. Towering 14050 ft (4282 meters) above the sea is one of the most beautiful peaks to scale in the region. The unique pattern of Eastern Edged of Himalaya is extraordinary unique floristic region which can represent the region around the central Asiatic highland and continuous Eastern Edged of Himalaya. Generally covered with snow between November and May is about 80 kilometre North – East of Putao.

Brief Itinerary

Day-1 (Friday): Putao (arrival)
Day-2 (Saturday): Jeep to upper Shangaung, challenging trek to Wasandum.
Day-3 (Sunday): Easy trek to Awadum and Ziyadum. Beyond this is a complete wilderness.
Day-4 (Monday): Trek to camp I.
Day-5 (Tuesday): Trek to camp II and III.
Day-6 (Wednesday): Trek to the base camp.
Day-7 (Thursday) Trek to the Phonyin Razi summit, and back to the base camp.
Day-8 (Friday): Trek to camp II.
Day-9 (Saturday) Trek to Ziyadum.
Day-10 (Sunday) Easy trek to Awadum and Wasandam.
Day-11 (Monday) Return trek to Shangaung, jeep to Putao.
Day-12 (Tuesday) Putao (departure) – onward journey.

Detailed Itinerary

Day – 1 (Friday): Putao (Arrival)
Arrival. Upon arrival at Putao airport you will be met by Putao Trekking House’s representative and transferred to your guest house. Putao lies in a flat valley, jumping-off point for trekkers who want to explore the region’s deep forests, wildlife sanctuaries and snow-capped mountains etc. After a brief fresh up take a walk around Putao for the orientation. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge. (_, _, D)

 
Day-2 (Saturday): Putao – Shangaung – Wasandum (jeep/trek)
Early in the morning walk to Putao market (approx 10 minute), visit attractive market often busy with local ethnic tribes. Return to hotel, breakfast and depart by jeep or truck depending on the group size to upper Shangaung (17 km, approx one hour) on a rugged road. Your adventure starts as you get off the jeep and start trek to Wasandum (20 km, approx 6 hours) trek through Mt. Shangaung at 4468 ft, 1362 meters. First 10 km will be straight up along the trail winding up to the top of Mt. Shangaung from then trail goes all the way down to Wasandum. This will be the testing journey as you have to ascend from 1060 meters up to 1362 meters and then descend back to 860 meters. Wasandum is a small Rawan village situates by Namro creek. Check in at your guest house and for those who wish to wash up may go to Namro creek to do so with crystal clean water. Dinner and overnight at Wasandum village house in dormitory style. (B, L, D)

 
Day-3 (Sunday): Wasandum – Awadum – Kalang – Ziyadum (trek)
Breakfast and leave the village for your today destination at Ziyadum, through relatively flat land with just few of ups and downs. At first cross Namro creek to Awadum (7.4 km, approx 3 hours). Awadum is mainly inhabited by Lisu and separate in to two by a large paddy field. Here we cross a suspension bridge that spans Namlang creek to Kalang (4.8 km, approx one hour and thirty minute). Lunch stop and continue trek to Ziyadum (6.4 km, approx 2 hours) through deep evergreen forests. Ziyadum, situate at an altitude of 3440 ft, 1048 meters is the most northwestern and last frontier village in Putao region, mainly resident are Rawan tribe. It is recommended to visit Ziya creek for a fantastic sunset view with a blazing snow Mountains in the west which spark in to steady flowing Ziya creek. Day-4 (Monday): Ziyadum – Camp I
Breakfast and set off for camp I, located at 4980 ft, 1518 meters by the side of Phangran creek. After a good two hour walking reach to confluence of Phonyin and Phangran creeks. Cross Phonyin creek by bridge and keep trekking up and down along Phangran creek until you reached to your today destination at camp I (approx 21/2 hours). Dinner and overnight at forest camp. Day-5 (Tuesday): Camp I – Camp III
We enjoy morning beauty of the nature surrounding while our cook prepare breakfast for us. Breakfast and we set off for camp II, situates at 8016 ft, 2443 meters along the route steadily ascending (approx 2 hour). Lunch stop and we set off our today destination camp III, situate at 9996 ft, 3046 meters, with the trail mostly step up (approx 3 hour). Dinner and overnight at forest camp. (B, L, D)

 
Day-6 (Wednesday): Camp III – Base Camp
Breakfast and set off for today destination at base camp, locate at 1200 ft, 3658 meters (approx 7 hours) This part of the trek will be the most challenging one as the route going up and down rapidly. As you go higher the climb becomes deeper and strenuous. You should reach the base camp after a hard and long day on the rough terrain. (So-called base camp but there is not even having enough space available to pitch a couple tents). At this stage it will be impossible to make fire due to heavy snow and no firewood. You may just have to get by with cooked your meal using gas stove and stay freeze during the night. Dinner and overnight in tents. (B, L, D)

 
Day-7 (Thursday): Base camp – Summit – Base camp
Breakfast and set off for the summit at 14050 ft, 4282 meters. Having about one hour climb you reach on the top of the glacier from where you see a beautiful lake down. This part actually takes about two and a half hour. If the weather clear you may see many other snow capped mountains in the region. The view from this spot is spectacular as you literally standing one of the highest spot in the region and most of the other summits were right below you. At this stage weather change may be rapid then ever and the visibility getting limited to just a couple of feet with strong wind as it could sweep through you at no time. Return back to base camp and spend another freezing night. Dinner and overnight in tents. (B, L, D)

 
Day-8 (Friday): Base Camp – Camp III – Camp II
Bit farewell to Phonyin Razi and set off for your destination camp II passing by camp III. Return journey will be no easier having descended quite rapidly although it was not as strenuous as up journey. Dinner and overnight at camp.(B, L, D)

 
Day-9 (Saturday): Camp II – Ziyadum
Listen to the bird’s call and enjoy the environment. You have a rather relax morning as the distance to day will be much shorter. After early lunch set off for Ziyadum through the trek ups and down the valley. After a last up hill trek you reach Ziya plateau with a smoke from the farm which was the first sign of the civilization. A warm shower by all mean was a greatest enjoyment. Dinner and overnight at Ziyadum village house. (B, L, D)

 
Day-10 (Sunday): Ziyadum – Wasandum
Have a lazy morning and after an early lunch bid farewell to the villagers and head back to your today destination, Awadum crossing suspension bridges and through beautiful evergreen Avenues. Dinner and overnight at Wasandum guest house. (B,L,D)

 
Day-11 (Monday): Wasandum – Shangaung – Putao(trek/jeep)
Having left the wilderness behind and returning to the clutches of human civilization. The trek goes challenging uphill to the plateau of Mt. Shangaung, before rapidly downhill to Shangaung where your jeep would meets you and takes you back to Putao. Pack lunch on the way. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge. (B, L, D)

 
Day-12 (Tuesday): Putao (Departure)
Departure. Breakfast and perhaps a last minute shopping at Putao market and further visit in and around Putao with suggestion by your guide. Lunch and afternoon transfer to airport for your onward departure flight to conclude this unique experience. (B, L, _)
