Mt. Phongun Razi – Towering 3635 meters above the sea is the most suitable peak to scale among the many peaks in the region. Generally cover with snow between November and May. The remoteness and difficult accessibility of the region has helped to maintain the pristine purity of its forest and ecological systems offering unparalleled opportunities to present-day professionals in the field of zoology, botany, forestry, environmental protection, conservation and ecology as well as hardy eco-tourists and mountaineers who prefer the challenge of a testing back-packing trip in the mountain fastness to a routine attractions in the more accessible urban centers.

Brief Itinerary

Day-1 (Friday): Putao (arrival).
Day-2 (Saturday): Jeep/truck to Shangaung, challenging trek to Wasandum.
Day-3 (Sunday): Easy trek to Awadum and Ziyadam.
Day-4 (Monday): Trek to Chaungzone and Thitpingyi Camp.
Day-5 (Tuesday): Trek to Khantautmyit Camp.
Day-6 (Wednesday): Trek to Snow Line Camp.
Day-7 (Thursday): Trek to Phongun summit, return trek to Khantautmyit Camp.
Day-8 (Friday): Trek to Thitpingyi Camp.
Day-9 (Saturday): Trek to Chaungzone and Ziyadam Village.
Day-10 (Sunday): Trek to Wasandam Village.
Day-11 (Monday): Return trek to Shangaung, jeep/truck to Putao.
Day-12 (Tuesday): Putao (departure) – onward journey.

Detailed Itinerary

Day-1 (Friday): Putao (arrival)
Arrival. Upon arrival at Putao airport meet and greet by Putao Lodge’s representative and transferred to your hotel. Putao, lies in a flat valley, jumping-off point for trekkers who want to explore the region’s deep forests, wildlife sanctuaries and snow-capped mountains etc. After a brief fresh up we have light lunch and take a walk in and around Putao for the orientation. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge.

 
Day-2 (Saturday): Putao – Shangaung – Wasundum (jeep/trek)

Breakfast and we visit attractive Putao market often fills with colorful ethnic minorities. Later we depart by jeep or truck depending on the group size to upper Shangaung with the distance 17 km which takes us about one hour on a rugged road. Our adventure starts as we get off the jeep and start trek to Wasandum with the distance 20 km which takes us about 6 hours trek through Mt. Shangaung at 4468 ft, 1362 meters. First 10 km will be straight up along the trail winding up to the top of Mt. Shangaung from then trail goes all the way down to Wasandum. This will be the testing journey for us as we have to ascend from 1060 meters up to 1362 meters and then descend back to 860 meters. Wasandum is a small Rawan tribe village situates by Namro creek. Dinner and spend the night at Wasandum village house in dormitory style.

 
Day-3 (Sunday): Wasandum – Awadum – Kalang – Ziyadum (trek)

Breakfast and we leave the village for our today destination at Ziyadum, through relatively flat land with just few of ups and downs. At first we cross Namro creek to Awadum with the distance 7.4 km which takes us about 3 hours. Awadum is mainly inhabited by Lisu and separate in to two by a large paddy field. We continue trek to Ziyadum with the distance 6.4 km which takes us about 2 hours through deep evergreen forests. Ziyadum, situate at altitude of 3440 ft, 1048 meters is the most northwestern and last frontier village in Putao region, mainly resident are Rawan tribes. After a brief fresh up we visit Ziya creek for a fantastic sunset view with a blazing snow Mountains in the west which spark in to steady flowing Ziya creek. Dinner and overnight at Ziyadum village house in dormitory style.

 
Day-4 (Monday): Ziyadum – Chaungzone – Thitpingyi (trek)

Breakfast and we continue trek to Chaungzone with the distance 9.6 km which should take us about 3 hours leaving human inhabitant behind. At first we cross Phangran creek by a suspension bridge and trek through evergreen forests with slightly ups and downs. We cross another suspension bridge spans over Namya creek and continue steep and uphill trek on mule track until we reach to lower Thitpingyi camp, situate at 4800 ft, 1460 meters above sea level with the distance at 3.2 km which should takes us about 2 hours. This will be of our first night of wildness camping. Dinner and overnight at camp.

 
Day-5 (Tuesday): Lower Thitpingyi – Upper Thitpingyi – Khantautmyit (trek)

Breakfast and we continue trek up hill to upper Thitpingyi camp with the distance 2.5 km which should takes us about one hour along the mule trek. From here we continue trek to Khantautmyit camp, situate 8500 ft, 2575 meters above sea with the distance 4.8 km which should take us about 6 hours. After a few km we trek up on mule trek we get our selves in to the jungle trek goes through deep ups and down with narrow shoulder of a smaller cliff. Nevertheless the trekking route will be the best experience passing through variety of forest type and bird life as we passing through evergreen forest in to hill pine and now into moist upper deciduous forest. We will notice Rhododendron flowers in their blossom and trees having thick moss on them. Khantautmyit is one of the most beautiful spots having large tree with colorful Rhododendron bushes around. Dinner and overnight at camp.

 
Day-6 (Wednesday): Khantautmyit – Snow line (trek)

Breakfast and we continue trek to snow line, elevation approximately 10000 ft, 3050 meters with the distance 6.4 km, which takes us about 3 – 4 hours trek depends on camp site location. Trek route will be a challenging one with narrow line however beautiful pine elevation with moist upper deciduous forest yet fill with Rhododendron make the scenery impressive. There are three different camp sites on snow line and we will find right spot for camping according to the snowfall. Dinner and overnight in tents. Tonight we will have to prepare for cold weather as temperature could be freezing during the night.

 
Day-7 (Thursday): Snow line – Mt. Phongun summit – Snow line (snow trek)
Breakfast and we trek to the summit of Mt. Phongun at 11920 ft, 3635 meters. The distance is just little over 3 km, but depending on snow conditions, it could take us anything between 3 to 7 hours to get to the summit. The time we spend on the summit will also depend on weather conditions. If the weather is clear, it is possible to experience spectacular views all round and see as far as the lands of India’s Assam to the west. We return to our camp and continue journey back to Khantautmyit camp. Dinner and overnight in tents.

 
Day-8 (Friday): Khantautmyit – Thitpingyi (trek)
Breakfast and we relax through the morning admiring the fantastic surrounding. After early lunch we trek back to Thitpingyi camp through the trek winding ups and downs with constantly changing topography, flora and fauna. The trek is relatively easy as we will be mostly on mule trek. Dinner and overnight in tents.

 
Day-9 (Saturday): Thitpingyi – Chaungzone – Ziyadum (trek)
Breakfast and we shall be heading for Ziyadum passing Chaungzone camp through nice and easy down hill on mule trek. Once we cross Namya creek by suspension bridge we get in to dense evergreen forest and route goes through winding along Phangran creek with ups and downs. Hot bath and a warm bed by all mean will be of a greatest enjoyment and comfort after several rugged camping nights in the jungle crawling in a tent. Celebrating dinner over bonfire and enjoy comfortable night.

 
Day-10 (Sunday): Ziyadum – Wasundum (trek)
We have an easy morning as the return journey today is easy and relatively short. After an early lunch we bid farewell to the locals and head back to our today destination Wasandum crossing Awadum and Kalang crossing suspension bridges and through beautiful evergreen forests. Dinner and overnight at Wasandum village house.

 
Day-11 (Monday): Wasundum – Shangaung – Putao (trek/jeep)
Having left the wilderness behind and returning to the clutches of human civilization. As soon as we start the trek goes challenging uphill to the plateau of Mt. Shangaung, before continuing rapidly downhill to Shangaung where our jeep meets us and takes us back to Putao. Pack lunch on the way. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge. (B, L, D)

 
Day-12 (Tuesday): Putao (departure) – onward journey
Departure. Breakfast and perhaps a last minute shopping at Putao market and further visit in and around Putao with suggestion by your guide. Lunch and afternoon transfer to airport for your onward departure flight to conclude this unique experience. (B, L, _)
